Author Talk: Cantonese Yankee

Thursday, November 17, 2011, 7:00 p.m. — Cantonese Yankee is the narrative of Kwong Bing Kong or “Bing,” a student sent by Imperial China to New England to study Western science and technology as part of an educational mission. One of 120 boys sent over between 1872-1881, the biography follows Bing and his ten year stay in America and his subsequent return to China as a modern Mandarin. Tang has written an absorbing and romantic drama based on family stories and her own hours of research at the Yale University Archives and the Connecticut Historical Society. During the 19th Century, China faced a cabal of foreign powers ready to sweep the ancient empire from the pages of history. There have been books written about those days but few have plumbed the depths of her civilization—what were the customs, mores and ethos of her people? In Cantonese Yankee the author presents the intimate life of Bing and his family and the people of his day—and we are there with them. LOUISE SU TANG, Bing’s granddaughter, was close to her grandfather during her childhood years in Shanghai. After a three year interlude in Portland, Oregon, where her father was Chinese Consul, she completed her secondary education at the Convent of the Sacred Heart in Shanghai. She received her B.A. in journalism and political science from UC Berkeley, and her M.A. in School Administration from CSULA. Join us for an absorbing evening of this author’s insights into Chinese and Western history.

FILM SCREENING: NIGHT MARKET HERO

Thursday, November 10, 6:00p – Crowell Public Library and the Taiwanese United Fund are happy to present a special screening of the blockbuster film Night Market Hero, (雞排英雄) a heartwarming story of a Taiwanese night market community. The story reveals the strong work ethic and determination of the vendors and their community when livelihoods are threatened by the plans of a construction company to build on the property. Night Market Hero is not just a story of community struggle, with the nostalgic sights and sounds of food and games that bring the people together. It is also an exhibition of the colorful and iconic culinary exuberance of the Taiwanese culture. Director YEH Tien-lun 葉天倫 tells a feel-good story with a team of comedic veterans like Chu Ko-liang 豬哥亮 and Lotus Wang 王彩樺 with younger names like actor-model Blue Lan 藍正龍 and Alice KO 柯佳嬿. You won’t want to miss this melodramatic tale pitting the power of community values and Taiwanese "street democracy," over the forces of political corruption and the venal property developers. Crowell Library thanks the Taiwanese United Fund (TUF), a non-profit organization dedicated to culture and performing arts, for bringing Night Market Hero to library patrons. The movie runs 124 minutes. Free popcorn will be available while it lasts!

Glaucoma: the Silent Thief of Sight

MEDICAL MONDAYS @Crowell Public Library -- GLAUCOMA: The Silent Thief of Sight Monday, September 12, 2011, 6:00 p.m. Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that gradually steal sight without warning. In the early stages of the disease, there may be no symptoms, but early detection is vital to stopping the progress of the disease. According to the National Institutes of Health National Eye Institute, glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness in the United States. * Join VIKAS CHOPRA, M.D. to learn how doctors detect this disease and the latest in treatments. There is no cure for glaucoma—yet. However, medication or surgery can slow or prevent further vision loss. The appropriate treatment depends upon the type of glaucoma among other factors. It was once thought that high pressure within the eye, also known as intraocular pressure or IOP, is the main cause of this optic nerve damage. Although IOP is clearly a risk factor, we now know that other factors must also be involved because even people with “normal” levels of pressure can experience vision loss from glaucoma. VIKAS CHOPRA, M.D. received his medical degree from Pennsylvania State University and served his residency in ophthalmology at the Kresge Eye Institute at Wayne State University’s Detroit Medical Center. His research fellowship in Molecular Biology was at the Beckman Research Institute, at the City of Hope, and his Glaucoma Fellowship was at the Kresge Eye Institute. Affiliated with the prestigious Doheny Eye Institute, Dr. Chopra is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology at USC. Join us for a fascinating look at a condition that is affecting many. The Internet Book of Life

Tuesday, September 6, 2011, 7 p.m. You are a working parent and you use the Internet occasionally for email and Facebook. You know that there are quality Web resources available for free that can really help you and your family. But who has time to find and evaluate them? The Internet Book of Life is your shortcut to these treasures. Written by a working mother and front line reference librarian, The Internet Book of Life is a guide to web sites and mobile phone apps that help real people make wise decisions in so many aspects of modern living: everything from saving money, to getting homework done, to just feeling happier. Each chapter addresses real-life family dilemmas such as whether and how to fix the car, how to find the best price for baby diapers, and even how to find a clinical trial that might save a life. As the country climbs out of recession, this comprehensive guide to free Web services is especially welcome. It is the lively, indispensable reference that finds a home next to every household computer…or Web-enabled cell phone! IRENE E. McDERMOTT gains insight about the web from her daily front-line experience as reference librarian and systems manager at the Crowell Public Library in San Marino, California. She writes about her discoveries in her column, “Internet Express,” which has appeared in Searcher magazine since 1997. The second addition of her book, The Librarian’s Internet Survival Guide was published by Information Today in 2006. McDermott shares her Pasadena bungalow with her teenage son.

World Wide Knit in Public Day!

Friday, June 10th 11:00 a.m. – WORLD WIDE KNIT IN PUBLIC DAY was started in 2005 by Danielle Landes as a way for knitters to come together and enjoy each other’s company. According to the WWKiP website, it’s become the largest event of its kind in the world. The knit-wits at Crowell Library are encouraging anyone who has needles and/or a crochet hook to stop by and see what’s going on with fellow yarn enthusiasts of the greater San Gabriel Valley. All ages are welcome! World Wide Knit in Public Day is a grand opportunity to show the general public what the knitting community looks like and what diverse and dynamic talents they possess. Instead of lining the sidewalks of Huntington Drive, relax in the Library’s comfy Barth Community Room sharing perls of wisdom while keeping everyone in stitches. It will be impossible not to cosmically connect to the worsted wizardry permeating the room. Knitters know their craft transcends language barriers and could easily bring world peace should everyone in the world knit simultaneously on the same day – imagine the size of THAT scarf! Is that a goal or what? It has not been shown that stitching together thwarts stormy weather, but it does foretell a good yarn. To learn more about World Wide Knit in Public Day, visit: http://www.wwkipday.com/ We needle you not! Light refreshments will be served. The more the merrier! LA Opera Talks Dance

All about… L'Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato. SUNDAY, April 17th 2:00 p.m. What is L'Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato? The first-ever artistic collaboration with the Music Center, LA Opera and the Mark Morris Dance Group, for starters. Celebrating its 30th anniversary, the Mark Morris Dance Group performance of L'Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato at LA Opera will feature 24 dancers. Conductor Grant Gershon will lead the LA Opera Orchestra and Chorus as well as a quartet of world-class singers: sopranos Hei-Kyung Hong and Sarah Coburn, tenor Barry Banks and bass-baritone John Relyea. With George Frideric Handel's pastoral ode as the musical landscape, and set to the poetry of John Milton, along with sets inspired by William Blake's later watercolors, L'Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato is a true artistic feat sure to captivate. “A work of genius…it fills the soul with wonder." - The New York Times "As waves of running, leaping dancers breast the stage, arms wide in a flying embrace, they gather you up into the simple exhilarating joy of the moment. You never want it to stop." - Guardian.co.uk At Crowell Public Library, community educator BOYD COOK will discuss Milton’s poetry, Handel’s score, and especially the choreography. Coming from a family of dancers, Mr. Cook should bring significant insight to this aspect of the production. Whether a fine arts aficionado or a curious novice, attendees will be delightfully entertained and encouraged to ask questions and offer comments.

CERT Training for San Marino

(Community Emergency Response Team) Four Tuesdays: May 3, 10, 17, 24 6:00-9:00 p.m. As we’ve all seen recently, disasters strike anywhere, anytime and one can never been too prepared. Crowell Library is pleased to partner with the San Marino Fire Department for CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) Training. The four evening sessions will be offered from 6-9 p.m. in the Barth Community Room at the library. The program is free, without obligation, and vital for anyone who is interested in wanting to do more than “duck, cover and hold” during ANY kind of emergency. CERT graduates receive a CERT emergency backpack kit upon training completion. The CERT Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. An Evening of Poets & Poems

THURSDAY, APRIL7th 7:00 P.M. Patrons from all over the greater San Gabriel Valley will read their original works at a special presentation celebrating Poetry Month at Crowell Public Library, Thursday, April 7th at 7:00 p.m. Inaugurated by the Academy of American Poets in 1996, National Poetry Month is now held every April, when publishers, booksellers, literary organizations, libraries, schools and poets around the country band together to celebrate poetry and its vital place in American culture. In that vein, Crowell Library takes this opportunity to promote public support of the literary arts while broadening the recognition of local poets and their work. Come listen to the inspired works of published poets and amateurs alike and let your imagination be swept up in the auditory imagery of it all. If you’ve never been to a live poetry reading, this is your chance to experience it in your own neighborhood, with your neighbors next to you and at the podium. Be prepared to be surprised or emotionally challenged or to laugh in fits. "For poems are not, as people think, simply emotions (one has emotions early enough)—they are experiences." —Rainer Maria Rilke Java will be served with light refreshments. Berets and bongos are optional. A poem a day will not keep the budget deficit away, but reading one is always a good investment. The more the merrier! Share this event on Facebook & Twitter. 1890 Huntington Drive, San Marino, CA 91108-2595 ● Phone: (626) 300-0777

The Legend of PANCHO BARNES

Celebrate Women’s History Month! THURSDAY, MARCH 10TH,7:00 P.M. A charismatic figure immortalized in Tom Wolfe's book The Right Stuff, FLORENCE “PANCHO” BARNES was one of the most important women in 20th Century aviation. A tough and fearless pilot, Pancho flew on Amelia Earhart's wingtip, performed as a barnstormer throughout California, and made a name for herself as Hollywood's first female stunt pilot in the 1920's and 30's. Just before WWII she opened a ranch near Edwards Air Force Base that became a famous -- some would say notorious -- hangout for test pilots and movie stars. Known as the 'Happy Bottom Riding Club,' it became the epicenter of the aviation world during the early jet age. Chuck Yeager celebrated breaking the sound barrier there in 1947, and Howard Hughes and Jimmy Doolittle caroused in the bar. Pancho has become a fascinating yet enigmatic icon whose swagger is often celebrated, but whose story is largely unknown. Until now. After the screening of the film, producer NICK SPARK will be on hand to answer questions and enhance your appreciation of this dynamic aviation pioneer named Pancho. A filmmaker and writer with a keen interest in history, Nick is a former contributing editor to Wings, a bi-monthly aviation history magazine with national circulation. His articles have appeared in Naval History, the Annals of Improbable Research, the U.S. Naval Institute’s Proceedings and Naval History. He has appeared on National Public Radio and other media outlets domestic and abroad concerning his historical research. In 2005 the American Aviation Historical Society presented him with its Author’s Award for his article, “Secrets of the Spirit.” Seats are limited and reservations are strongly urged: (626) 300-0777 ext. 579.

Laughter yoga has been introduced into senior centers, cancer wards, corporations, and prisons.” Do you really need a reason to laugh? He takes moments.” In his many years with the league, Andrew Bernstein has covered more championship series games than any photographer.
