The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) estimates that as many as 9 million Americans have their identities stolen each year.
Cyber criminals are working 24/7 to
steal identities, regardless of a person’s age or financial status. Once these criminals
have personal information, they can empty bank accounts, max out credit cards,
open new utility accounts, or even get medical treatment using someone else’s
health insurance. An identity thief can file a tax refund in someone else’s name.
Anyone can be a victim of this crime, even a newborn or a deceased loved one.
On Saturday April 6 at Crowell Public Library,
cyber security expert Jeff Martinez will give a talk on preventing ID theft and
dealing with its consequences. He will
present the warning signs, how and where to report identity theft and discuss
preventative measures that everyone can practice on a daily basis. He will urge attendees to always use trusted
and verified websites with what is called SSL, or
Secure Sockets Layer which provides an extra layer of privacy (also called
encryption) and should be used by any website requiring financial information,
such as when purchasing items. Jeff will explain the variety of options
available for identity protection such as requesting notifications when inquiries
are made, or locking one’s credit with the major credit bureaus.
Jeff Martinez is founder of Treveri Capital LLC, an asset and
risk management company. He’s also
Co-Founder of Oxford BioChronometrics a cyber security company that specializes
in the next generation user authentication. He has presented this program to
members of LA Fintech, Crypto 213, and the Los Angeles Athletic Club.

documents at home, but personal risk these days is everywhere we turn and Jeff
will cover the gamut, including social media. Arm yourself with knowledge and share it with friends and family
