Monthly Morning Movie Classics

Third Thursday of every month at 10 a.m. Put your day in focus with a morning movie guaranteed to please. Join us at the Crowell Public Library for complimentary popcorn and free screenings of some of the best films ever made. Here’s the Fall line-up: September 16, Adam’s Rib, 1949. Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy at their best. October 21, North By Northwest, 1959. Hitchcock directs; Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint star. November 18, Some Like It Hot, 1959. Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemon will have you rolling in the aisles. December 16, A Christmas Story, 1983. Darren McGavin and Melinda Dillon star in this tribute to the All-American Christmas—the real one. All screenings will take place in the Barth Community Room.

Teens: Join the Anime Club!

Meets monthly, second Friday of the month at 3:15pm in the Barth Community Room
Meetings this Fall: September 10th, October 8th, November 12th and December 10th

Middle School and High School students (grades 7-12) from far and wide are invited to Crowell Public Library’s Anime Club. To satisfy teens’ appetite for anime, we hold free screenings of episodes of popular anime shows as well as feature-length anime films! Japanese snacks and popcorn are served at all anime club meetings.

Look forward to starting this fall with a screenings of Case Closed: The Phantom of Baker Street, which is about the young detective Conan Edogawa, whose latest case brings him to 19th century London, pitting him against the notorious Jack the Ripper! (September 10th; rated TVPG), Other titles to look forward to this fall include Black Cat and Tsubasa RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE: Volume 1! We meet monthly on Fridays at 3:15 pm in the Barth Community Room. Meetings this fall are September 10th, October 8th, November 12th and December 10th.

Anime Club is intended for teens; parents may accompany their teens, but content may not be suitable for younger children. Teens are encouraged to bring their friends. All teens attending films rated PG-13 or TV-14 must present a signed parental waiver. Call the library for details or e-mail Carrie Wilson at cwilson@cityofsanmarino.org. Teen Library Club (TLC) Kick-off Meeting

September 17th @ 3:30 p.m.
Also meeting October 15th and November 19th

This fall, Middle School and High School students (grades 7-12) in the San Gabriel Valley are invited to Crowell Public Library’s Teen Library Club (TLC), formerly the Teen Advisory Board (TAB). Teen Library Club is a fun place for teens to hang out after school—they can socialize with friends, play games, listen to music, talk about books, and do other craft or art activities. Joining is simple: all teens need to do is show up! Meetings will be every third Friday of the month at 3:30pm in the Barth Room.

This fall, the kick-off meeting will be September 17th, followed by October 15th and November 19th meetings. The first meeting will be a gaming paradise—teens can play Guitar Hero 5, Apples to Apples, and more. Refreshments are served are all meetings.

Kids, Social Networking & Safety

MONDAY September 20TH - 7:00 P.M. Facebook, instant messaging, texting: kids love it, but parents have legitimate concerns about their children’s incessant chatting with friends and strangers. Are there really predators lurking around every post? Join IRENE McDERMOTT for a back-to-school presentation about how best to manage a family’s involvement in the overwhelming new world of online social networking. She will discuss many aspects of the phenomena including: pornography, predators, paying to play games, commercialism, bullying, privacy, revealing too much information and generally, what is dangerous on the internet for children. Irene McDermott is a reference librarian and systems manager at the Crowell Public Library in the city of San Marino. Her next book, The Internet Book of Life, will be published in spring 2011. Her column, "Internet Express," appears monthly in Searcher magazine. This program is free and will take place in the Barth Community Room at Crowell.
