Coping Skills for Sight Loss

Two Mondays, June 18 & 25, 10:30 am

Sight loss can be caused by macular degeneration, glaucoma, cataracts or diabetic retinopathy. On two Mondays, June 18 and 25th, the Braille Institute will offer the latest information on adapting to visual changes and which assistive devices might be appropriate for individuals. Practical day-to-day applications will be presented such as organizing and identifying money and marking and labeling household items. The importance of staying connected will also be explored:  rediscovering the joy of reading, writing and communication. Attendees will learn about resources for getting around town, assistance with orientation and mobility.

According to the Braille Institute, twenty-one percent of people age 65 and over report some form of vision impairment. This represents 7.3 million people.  This workshop will address questions related to daily life with low vision. There are many causes of visual impairment and Braille Institute helps people of all ages overcome obstacles caused by low vision.

Braille Institute is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to eliminate barriers to a fulfilling life caused by blindness and severe sight loss.  Each year the Institute serves more than 75,000 people, providing an environment of hope and encouragement through integrated educational, social, and recreational programs and through our services, classes, and seminars.

Journey into Pu-erh Tea

Sunday, June 17th at 2:00 p.m.

Tea lovers far and wide are invited to come on a free Journey into Pu-erh Tea at Crowell Public Library on Sunday, June 17 at 2:00 p.m.  Presented by Jeffrey McIntosh, this program will consist of a lecture on the tea’s historic and geographic origins, ecological cultivation, health benefits, cultural evolution and relevance from the past to the present. The lecture will be followed by an interactive traditional Chinese tea ceremony. The library community will come to a deeper understanding of the benefits of this 'slow beverage' and how it complements and tempers the stresses of everyday life.  Attendees will gain an appreciation of the simplicity, subtlety, and pure enjoyment of the present moment, as well as the elegance and beauty of the traditional Chinese tea ceremony, in a space rooted in tradition, and adaptive to contemporary lifestyles.

Jeffrey McIntosh is a long time student of Tea Master Elaine Luo (owner of Denong Tea) and is a
tea master-in-training.  He has worked for Denong Tea in Yunnan Province for ten years, and is excited to share his knowledge with tea lovers everywhere.  Denong Tea is an education-focused company that prides itself in engaging directly with communities to promote healthy and conscious lifestyles through tea. It has participated as a vendor at the World Tea Festival in Las Vegas, Green Festival in Los Angeles, as well as the Los Angeles Tea Festival. The company has held lectures at the Pacific Palisade Public Libraries, and also presented its tea lecture and tasting ceremony for Lisa See’s book club.

People who seek a deeper understanding of Chinese culture through tea, or who value unique alternatives for living slower-paced, healthy, and enriched lifestyles, should not miss this special opportunity at Crowell Library, Sunday, June 17th in the Barth Community Room.
