THE ANTI-ALZHEIMER’S PRESCRIPTION

On Thursday, March 12, 2009 at 7:00 p.m., join us for a free information session that will explain Alzheimer’s disease including symptoms, risk factors and current research. Dr. Vincent Fortanasce, a neurologist for over 35 years, will outline a comprehensive method to prevent Alzheimer’s. Learn to take control of your health and start your Alzheimer’s prevention program.

A board certified neurological rehabilitation specialist, Dr. Fortanasce has lectured widely, from Yale to Stanford, and was twice named Outstanding Lecturer of the Year at the University of Southern California School of Medicine. He has published numerous articles and four successful trade books, including The Anti-Alzheimer’s Prescription, the proceeds from which go to The Fighting Alzheimer’s Fund charity. Dr. Fortanasce has treated high-profile individuals such as Pope John Paul II and Major League Hall of Famer, Tommy Lasorda. As a physician and bio-ethicist, he has appeared on 60 Minutes, The Today Show, Dr. Phil, Dateline and numerous radio programs. His syndicated program on St. Joseph’s Radio, has a listenership of more than 170,000.

READ ACROSS AMERICA @ THE CROWELL PUBLIC LIBRARY On Monday, March 2, at 7 p.m., come to the library and celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday for a special evening storytime. We’ll share Seuss books, crafts, and food, sure to put you in a “Seussical” mood!

Valentine Craft Day

Valentine’s Day is fast approaching! Do you have someone special you would like to make a card or a craft for? Join us at the library for our special Valentine Make-It and Take-It Craft Day on Wednesday, February 11. Children, ages 3 and up, are invited to the public library to make valentine crafts by dropping in any time between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. Helpers and supplies will be on hand. Registration is not required.
 

Royal Tea & Storytime

Here ye, Here ye, boys and girls of the land are cordially invited to attend the Royal Tea and Storytime at the Crowell Public Library. This exciting event will take place on February 28, 2009 from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Come and meet the Queen and Princesses of the Pasadena Tournament of the Royal Roses Court. You will be enchanted by stories of princes and princesses and also be given the opportunity to ask questions and pose for pictures, so don’t forget your cameras. All those in attendance will receive a special crown. Your majesties will be the royal envy of all your friends. No registration required.

Local Mystery Writer to Speak

Back by popular demand, author Denise Hamilton will be reading from her latest book, The Last Embrace, Thursday evening, January 22nd at 7:00 p.m. in the Barth Community Room. The Chicago Sun Times called Denise: "One of the brightest new talents to enter crime fiction over the last few years...” A former LA Times journalist and Fulbright Scholar, she is widely known for high-octane thrillers set in Los Angeles that also examine social issues. Join us for a lively discussion and book signing.

Ray Bradbury to Speak at Crowell First Anniversary

Can you believe that the new library has been open for a year already? Join us as we celebrate our one year anniversary on Saturday, January 31. Hear Sarah Yu play the zither at 11:30 a.m. Witness the “One City, One Book” for 2009 announcement at noon. See the unveiling of the Donor Wall and the dedication of the Carolyn Crain Art Gallery, featuring the Pasadena Art Colony. At 1:00, hear famed science fiction author Ray Bradbury. Finally, enjoy a professional children’s show at 2 p.m. It’s a birthday blowout!

Prune Those Roses

Ron Serven, Park Manager of Lacy Park will present his annual Rose Pruning Workshop at 9:30 AM on Saturday, January 10 in the Barth Room in the Library. If you want a great display of your roses in the spring, you need to spend a little time out in the garden this month to get your rose plants ready. With the warm, sunny days we're having, you don't want to wait. Pruning isn't hard work, and when you know what you're doing, it is even fun. Authors to Speak

Crowell Library is thrilled to announce the return of mystery writer Denise Hamilton. Denise was with us back in June discussing the book she edited, L.A. Noir, consisting of short stories from a fabulous array of mystery writers. The critically acclaimed author of the Eve Diamond mystery series will be reading and discussing her latest bestseller, The Last Embrace, a sexy, atmospheric, and seductive thriller that transports readers to a fascinating, transitional time and place—1949 Los Angeles. January 22, 7:00 p.m. This event is supported by Poets & Writers, Inc. through a grant it has received from The James Irvine Foundation.

On Thursday, February 19th, at 7:00 p.m., author and choreographer Mark Knowles will be discussing (and demonstrating!) the history and development of tap dancing prior to 1900, the focus of his book, Tap Roots: The Early History of Tap Dancing. He’ll cover the many cultural influences (including Irish, English, African, and West Indian) leading to the creation of modern tap dancing and discuss plantation, theatrical and music hall styles.

Both events will be held in the Library’s Barth Community Room and are free.
