Teens: Join the Anime Club!

Meets monthly, second Friday of the month at 3:15pm in the Barth Community Room
Meetings this Fall: September 10th, October 8th, November 12th and December 10th

Middle School and High School students (grades 7-12) from far and wide are invited to Crowell Public Library’s Anime Club. To satisfy teens’ appetite for anime, we hold free screenings of episodes of popular anime shows as well as feature-length anime films! Japanese snacks and popcorn are served at all anime club meetings.

Look forward to starting this fall with a screenings of Case Closed: The Phantom of Baker Street, which is about the young detective Conan Edogawa, whose latest case brings him to 19th century London, pitting him against the notorious Jack the Ripper! (September 10th; rated TVPG), Other titles to look forward to this fall include Black Cat and Tsubasa RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE: Volume 1! We meet monthly on Fridays at 3:15 pm in the Barth Community Room. Meetings this fall are September 10th, October 8th, November 12th and December 10th.

Anime Club is intended for teens; parents may accompany their teens, but content may not be suitable for younger children. Teens are encouraged to bring their friends. Teen Library Club (TLC) Kick-off Meeting

September 17th @ 3:30 p.m.

This fall, Middle School and High School students (grades 7-12) in the San Gabriel Valley are invited to Crowell Public Library’s Teen Library Club (TLC), formerly the Teen Advisory Board (TAB). Teen Library Club is a fun place for teens to hang out after school—they can socialize with friends, play games, listen to music, talk about books, and do other craft or art activities. Joining is simple: all teens need to do is show up! Meetings will be every third Friday of the month at 3:30pm in the Barth Room.

This fall, the kick-off meeting will be September 17th, followed by October 15th and November 19th meetings. The first meeting will be a gaming paradise—teens can play Guitar Hero 5, Apples to Apples, and more. Refreshments are served are all meetings.

Kids, Social Networking & Safety

MONDAY September 20TH - 7:00 P.M. Facebook, instant messaging, texting: kids love it, but parents have legitimate concerns about their children’s incessant chatting with friends and strangers. Are there really predators lurking around every post? Join IRENE McDERMOTT for a back-to-school presentation about how best to manage a family’s involvement in the overwhelming new world of online social networking. She will discuss many aspects of the phenomena including: pornography, predators, paying to play games, commercialism, bullying, privacy, revealing too much information and generally, what is dangerous on the internet for children. Irene McDermott is a reference librarian and systems manager at the Crowell Public Library in the city of San Marino. Her next book, The Internet Book of Life, will be published in spring 2011. Her column, "Internet Express," appears monthly in Searcher magazine. This program is free and will take place in the Barth Community Room at Crowell.

Free Friendly Landscape Training Classes

September 4-October 9, 2010 The City of San Marino is sponsoring a series of four free presentations on water preservation by the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California. The California Friendly Landscape Training classes have proven to be an important and successful tool for reducing outdoor water use through the education of professional landscapers and home gardeners. The classes that are being offered in San Marino are geared for residential homeowners, and participants will find them quite interesting. Figaro Weds!

The LA Opera Talk Series continues @ Crowell Public Library: SUNDAY, September 19th 2:00 p.m. Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro L.A. Opera will present a free audio-visual presentation of Mozart’s comic masterpiece, The Marriage of Figaro, as part of their ongoing LA Opera Talk series at Crowell Public Library. Whether a hardcore opera aficionado or a curious novice, attendees will be delightfully entertained and encouraged to ask questions and offer comments. One might even be inspired to make a trip to the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion for the full production conducted by Placido Domingo. The opera is set in Seville in the late 18th Century. It is a sequel to The Barber of Seville, which LA Opera performed in November of 2009, so some of the characters will ring a bell for those patrons who attended the Barber Opera Talk: Count Almaviva, with substantial help from Figaro, wooed and won the lovely Rosine who became his wife, but their marriage has gone sour because of his philandering. Figaro has quit barbering and is now the Count's major-domo. The Kitchen Shrink

MONDAY August 16TH - 6:00 P.M. In the past two decades, the medical profession, once considered a sacred, cherished vocation, has devolved into a business motivated by a desire for profits. Even psychiatry, once the mainstay of the human interaction between doctor and patient, has fallen victim to rising costs and dictates by insurance sources. How has medicine strayed so far from its roots? In The Kitchen Shrink: A Psychiatrist's Reflections on Healing in a Changing World, psychiatrist and lecturer DORA CALOTT WANG delves into what happened. Dora Calott Wang, M.D., is a psychiatrist, a medical school professor, and the recipient of a prestigious Lannan Foundation Writer's Residency. She was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and moved to the United States as a child. She is a graduate of the Yale School of Medicine, the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute, and the University of California, Berkeley M.A. program in English literature. Dora Calott Wang lives in New Mexico with her husband where she spearheaded an effort to remove Article 2, Section 22 of the state constitution, an unenforced law forbidding Asians from owning land. She hosts a television talk show, “Duke City Magazine.” This program is free and will take place in the Barth Community Room at Crowell.
