It’s Valentine’s Day-- Party Your Way

Middle school and high school students grades 6-12 are invited to come to Crowell Public Library’s Valentine’s Day Party Your Way to celebrate their way. The party takes place on Tuesday, February 14th at 3:15pm in the Barth Community Room.

There will be something for everyone: for those that love Valentine’s Day, come to make gorgeous decoupage gift boxes, Hershey kiss bouquets, and decorate sugar cookies for your friends—or your sweetheart! Is Valentine’s Day too saccharine sweet and commercialized for you? Be creative—add a cynical twist to your gift boxes, make black Hershey kiss bouquets, and decorate sugar cookies (and eat, and roll your eyes at the sweetness)!

Love (or wisecracks!) will fill the air in the Barth Community room on February 14th. The festivities begin at 3:15pm. Registration is not required. Don’t miss out! College Prep Survival Tools

Getting prepared for college is tough. Libraries are a great place to find survival tools for college readiness. Embark on your journey at Crowell Public Library’s “College Prep Survival Tools” presentation Wednesday, Jan 25th at 7pm in the Barth Room.

You’ll find out about amazing library resources-- beyond the shelves, with the click of a mouse. This talk will highlight the best tools available, and provide quick, painless video tutorials on these resources, which include free online practice tests, scholarship finders, and more! These are resources you can access anytime--and on any computer, iPad or smartphone--for free! All you need is your library card. Don’t worry if you don’t have a library card—you can sign up for free after this presentation.

Candy is cliché—celebrate Halloween a brand new way! Teens grades 6-12 are invited to join Crowell Library’s first-ever “Food Fear Factor,” held in the Community Room. We’ll be serving such delicacies as Kitty Litter Cake. Don’t worry—it tastes better than it looks!

Aspiring chefs: assemble delightful concoctions—stuffed roaches, anyone?—and astound your friends! Recipes for all foods served at this event will be available. Who knew gross food could be so fun—and delicious? Be a champion gastronome on October 25th at 3:15pm. Come with a big appetite and a strong stomach—it’s time to face your fears!

Middle school students (grades 6-8) reign in on Tuesday, May 31, Wednesday June 1, and Thursday, June 2 from 3-8pm. High school students rule on Monday, June 6 and Tuesday June 7 from 3-8pm. All brainiacs in attendance will be entered to win a Barnes & Noble Gift card! Crowell Public Library: where you can get your exam cram on!

Transform Your Tees!

Don’t throw out that favorite ratty T-shirt! Middle school and High school students grades 6-12 from the San Gabriel Valley area are invited to transform these can’t-wear-in-public Fashion Don’ts into Fashion Do’s at the Crowell Public Library on Monday, April 25th at 3:30pm in the Barth Community Room.

Create purses, halters, dresses, pillowcases, book covers and more! Generation T(eens) can use ideas from Generation T: 108 Ways to Transform a T-Shirt by Megan Nicolay and the Generation T website (http://www.generation-t.com/)--or create their own designs. Supplies will be provided—we will even have extra tees to transform on hand, although teens are encouraged to bring their own for best fit!

Transform your Tees is a Teen Library Club (TLC) event. TLC’s mission is to make the library teen-friendly! All TLC events are sponsored by the Friends of the Crowell Public Library.

Teen Cosplay Party

San Gabriel Valley teens (grades 7-12) are invited to celebrate Halloween early at the Crowell Public Library’s first-ever Teen Cosplay Party. The party will be held in the Barth Community Room on Friday, October 22nd at 3:15pm. Teens are encouraged to come dressed as their favorite anime or manga character. Other inspirations for cosplay include: superheroes, sci-fi and fantasy characters, American cartoon characters, and any other literary and film characters or even concepts!

Cosplay can be summed up in this simple equation: Cosplay=Costume+Roleplay. Cosplay can be much more than being in costume—cosplayers walk like their character, talk like their character, dress like their character, be their character.

There’s more: festivities include games, treats, music and prizes. Games include speed charades, Mafia--with an anime role-playing twist!-- and Apples to Apples. Party-goers will enjoy Japanese snacks and desserts and make their own candy sushi. The first thirty guests to arrive will receive a raffle ticket for a Borders gift-card. Prizes will also be awarded for the best costume.

Teens are encouraged to bring their friends to the Teen Cosplay Party. Registration is not required and the event is free! Teens wearing inappropriate attire will not be admitted. Teens: Join the Anime Club!

Middle School and High School students (grades 7-12) from far and wide are invited to Crowell Public Library’s Anime Club. To satisfy teens’ appetite for anime, we hold free screenings of episodes of popular anime shows as well as feature-length anime films! Japanese snacks and popcorn are served at all anime club meetings.

Look forward to starting this fall with a screenings of Case Closed: The Phantom of Baker Street, which is about the young detective Conan Edogawa, whose latest case brings him to 19th century London, pitting him against the notorious Jack the Ripper! (September 10th; rated TVPG), Other titles to look forward to this fall include Black Cat and Tsubasa RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE: Volume 1! We meet monthly on Fridays at 3:15 pm in the Barth Community Room. Meetings this fall are September 10th, October 8th, November 12th and December 10th.

Anime Club is intended for teens; parents may accompany their teens, but content may not be suitable for younger children. Teens are encouraged to bring their friends. Teen Library Club (TLC) Kick-off Meeting

This fall, Middle School and High School students (grades 7-12) in the San Gabriel Valley are invited to Crowell Public Library’s Teen Library Club (TLC), formerly the Teen Advisory Board (TAB). Teen Library Club is a fun place for teens to hang out after school—they can socialize with friends, play games, listen to music, talk about books, and do other craft or art activities. Joining is simple: all teens need to do is show up! Meetings will be every third Friday of the month at 3:30pm in the Barth Room.

This fall, the kick-off meeting will be September 17th, followed by October 15th and November 19th meetings. The first meeting will be a gaming paradise—teens can play Guitar Hero 5, Apples to Apples, and more. Refreshments are served are all meetings.

Teen Summer Movie Matinees

San Marino, CA, June 5th 2010—Teens are invited to cool off and enjoy blockbuster films at the Crowell Public Library--and it is FREE! There is no better deal in town. Screenings are every week from June 17 through July 23 on Thursday afternoons at 2pm. Some films are rated PG-13 and may not be suitable for children under 13. Call the library for movie titles. Registration is not required. Popcorn, beverages and other snacks are served at all our matinees!

Teens (entering grades 7 to 12) registered for “Make Waves @ Your Library,” the young adult summer reading program, will receive a raffle ticket for attending each movie matinee! Teen Eclipse Party (Twilight Saga)

Teen fans of the Twilight saga are invited to celebrate the film release of Eclipse, the third book of the best-selling series, at Crowell Library’s Eclipse Party! The party starts July 7th at 3pm in the Barth Community Room. All attendees will receive twilight buttons to profess their loyalties—Team Edward or Team Jacob? Vegetarian or Villian? Teens (entering grades 7 to 12) registered for “Make Waves @ Your Library,” the young adult summer reading program, will receive a raffle ticket for attending the Eclipse Party! Raffles are drawn at the end of Summer Reading Program (August 1). Raffle prizes include a Special Edition of New Moon and an iPod Touch!

At the Eclipse Party, delicious Twilight-inspired treats will be served—enjoy red velvet cupcakes, chilled apple slices, punch, and ice cold Cullen Kisses! Vegetarian vampires (and humans) can snack on iced animal crackers. Dare to hold hands with Edward Cullen, who is cold as ice and hard as marble! Play Alice’s Visions, Twilight Trivia, and Twilight Charades. Teens are invited to dress up as their favorite Twilight Saga character for the costume contest—winners decided by secret ballot! Prizes (including books, posters, and T-shirts) awarded to best costumed guests.

Teen Henna Painting (Mehndi)

Ah, May—the weather is getting warmer and sleeves are getting shorter-- time to show off beautiful henna designs! The Crowell Public Library presents an opportunity for San Gabriel valley teens ages 12-18 to learn the art of mendhi on May 14th at 3:30pm.

Mehndi is the process of painting intricate patterns on the skin with henna paste. The designs are traditionally on the hands and feet, although these designs can also be applied on arms and legs. Henna paste is all-natural and non-toxic. The designs can last between three days and 2 weeks; they are never permanent.

Teens will not only enjoy painting these designs, but they will also receive instruction on how to make home-made henna paste. A wide variety of designs can be created using henna—something as simple as a bracelet design or a mandala that covers your palms! Henna painting is a relaxing, creative experience you can enjoy with your friends. No experience is required and all supplies will be provided. This free program is sponsored by the Friends of the Crowell Public Library.

Teen How-to-Draw Manga Workshop

Teens ages 12-18 from the San Gabriel Valley are welcomed to the Crowell Public Library’s “How to Draw Manga” workshop help on Saturday, May 8th at 2pm in the Barth Community Room. This workshop is taught by talented local artist Stephanie Ellwood, an Art Institute of San Diego graduate, who will introduce teens to sketch and coloration techniques used in manga style art.

“Manga” is a Japanese word meaning “humorous pictures.” “Manga” also describes a type of book—Japanese comics. Manga has a rich variety of genres aside from comedy; manga artwork is not only comedic, but dramatic, imaginative, and complex. Manga style artwork became increasingly popular in mid-20th century in Japan and has exploded in popularity throughout many Western countries during the latter part of the 20th century, particularly here in the United States.

Registration and experience not required! Teens unfamiliar with manga are invited to come and learn a new art style. Sketch supplies will be provided, but teens may also bring their own art supplies and sketchbooks. This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Crowell Public Library.

April is National Poetry Month—what better way to celebrate than by attending or performing at the Crowell Public Library's second annual poetry slam?! Teens and adults from the greater San Gabriel Valley will have an exciting opportunity to deliver dynamic poetry performances in a coffeehouse setting—complete with live acoustic guitar music played by local talent Rick Valladares. We will serve refreshments--and coffee, of course!

What exactly is a poetry slam? A poetry slam is a competition, a performance, entertainment, excitement, art. Everyone will have an opportunity to perform in front of a panel of judges. Never been in a poetry slam? This is your opportunity to shine!

Teens and adults ages 12 and up are invited to take a chance, get inspired, be creative, entertain, perform, slam! Registration is required of participants--first come, first served; call (626) 300-0777. Performers must have original pieces reviewed by staff before event begins. Middle School and High School students (grades 7-12) from the San Gabriel Valley region are invited to the Crowell Public Library’s first-ever Anti- Valentine’s Day Party on Friday, February 12th.

An Anti-Valentine’s Day party is a perfect venue for teens to creatively thumb their noses at commercial excess—there will be several activities, including making hilarious anti-valentines and writing break-up story mad-libs. They’ll have a blast poking fun at romance novel covers—we will provide color copies for teens to add illustrations and colorful comments. We will enjoy broken-heart cookies, chocolates and other sweets—after all, treats are the only redeeming feature of Valentine’s Day!

Teens don’t need to be single to join this party—they are encouraged to bring friends, including significant others, and enjoy mocking commercial stereotypes of romance. This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Crowell Public Library.

Teen Summer Reading: You Never Know…

Mystery will be the theme when YNK-You Never Know @ Your Library, this year's Summer Reading Program for Teens, kicks off June 11th. Students 6th grade and above can come in and register for the program and pick up a Reading Record and a complimentary coupon good for a 2 for 1 admission to Legoland. For each book we verify participants have read they will receive a "chance ticket" that can be entered into a drawing for any one of a number of prizes. This year's great prizes include, an I Pod Shuffle, I Tunes Cards, Karate lessons, and complimentary tickets to movie theatres and Aquarium of the Pacific. A drawing for the prizes will be held July 28th at the end of the program.
