San Marino Author C.B. Shiepe: Cliff Falls

THURSDAY November 4TH - 7:00 P.M. C.B. Shiepe, graduate of San Marino High School and USC, will discuss his screenplay that became a novel on Thursday, November 4th at 7:00 p.m. at Crowell Public Library. Cliff Falls is the story of an exploited child star on the run from his past -- until he hits that past head on. The story of how this former screenplay became a novel is an equally engaging saga that almost took a decade. Shiepe’s advice to new writers? “Don’t waste time wondering if you’re talented, just stay with it.” Shiepe will also talk about the self-publishing process which entails offset printing, distribution as well as promotion. Whether you’re an aspiring writer or just an eager reader, this evening with C.B. Shiepe is sure to inspire. This program is free and will take place in the Barth Community Room. What people are saying about Cliff Falls: “A fast, cinematic read, I recognized myself in Cliff Falls…The pressure to perform and to be someone other than who we want to be is universal. C. B. Shiepe has captured that experience and married it to our celebrity-centric culture. This entertaining, insightful book is the engaging result.” --Charles Slocum, Writers Guild of America, West "C.B. Shiepe has struck a chord capturing the core of the 'former child star' syndrome… something we haven’t seen before. I sat up through the dark hours reading this book. It kept me turning the pages...and filled me with a sense of hope. As a man who has lived and collected thousands of genuine kid star stories, I highly recommend this illuminating and insightful work." -- Paul Petersen, Founder, A Minor Consideration

Teen Cosplay Party

Barth Community Room
Oct 22nd @ 3:15pm

San Gabriel Valley teens (grades 7-12) are invited to celebrate Halloween early at the Crowell Public Library’s first-ever Teen Cosplay Party. The party will be held in the Barth Community Room on Friday, October 22nd at 3:15pm. Teens are encouraged to come dressed as their favorite anime or manga character. Other inspirations for cosplay include: superheroes, sci-fi and fantasy characters, American cartoon characters, and any other literary and film characters or even concepts!

Cosplay can be summed up in this simple equation: Cosplay=Costume+Roleplay. Cosplay can be much more than being in costume—cosplayers walk like their character, talk like their character, dress like their character, be their character.

There’s more: festivities include games, treats, music and prizes. Games include speed charades, Mafia--with an anime role-playing twist!-- and Apples to Apples. Party-goers will enjoy Japanese snacks and desserts and make their own candy sushi. The first thirty guests to arrive will receive a raffle ticket for a Borders gift-card. Prizes will also be awarded for the best costume.

Teens are encouraged to bring their friends to the Teen Cosplay Party. Registration is not required and the event is free! Teens wearing inappropriate attire will not be admitted. No weapons or masks, please. Call the library for details or e-mail Carrie Wilson at cwilson@cityofsanmarino.org. The Teen Cosplay Halloween Party is sponsored by the Friends of the Crowell Public Library.

Snapshot Day: Monday October 4th

Crowell Public Library is joining libraries across the state in participating in “Snapshot: One Day in the Life of California Libraries” to show how important public, school, academic and special libraries are to the state of California. Snapshot Day has been developed by the California Library Association (CLA). On Monday, October 4th, Crowell Public Library will compile statistics, customer comments, photographs, and other data chronicling a typical library day. CLA will collect the results and add them to those of other California libraries to show how they provide invaluable services to citizens statewide. Kim Bui-Burton, CLA President and Director of the Monterey Public Library, remarked, “I invite all California community members of any age to visit their library on this historic day and be a part of this first ever ‘snapshot’ of California libraries. Every kind of library provides unique and irreplaceable services. We know this because in communities across the state library usage is rising, and demand is growing for books and other resources, knowledgeable staff assistance and computer/Internet access -- despite budget cuts, reduced hours and programs. We believe this California libraries ‘snapshot’ will show the essential library services and life-changing experiences that California's communities depend on, especially during these times of severe economic distress. We look forward to capturing this "day in the life of California libraries" to demonstrate to decision makers the extent that our patrons, customers and future leaders rely on California libraries for critical library services, resources and programs -- now, more than ever." Smile and say “cheese” at Crowell Library on Monday, October 4th! For more information visit http://www.crowellpubliclibrary.org or call 626 300-0777 ext. 579.

The Kitchen Shrink

MONDAY August 16TH - 6:00 P.M. In the past two decades, the medical profession, once considered a sacred, cherished vocation, has devolved into a business motivated by a desire for profits. Even psychiatry, once the mainstay of the human interaction between doctor and patient, has fallen victim to rising costs and dictates by insurance sources. How has medicine strayed so far from its roots? In The Kitchen Shrink: A Psychiatrist's Reflections on Healing in a Changing World, psychiatrist and lecturer DORA CALOTT WANG delves into what happened. Dora Calott Wang, M.D., is a psychiatrist, a medical school professor, and the recipient of a prestigious Lannan Foundation Writer's Residency. She was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and moved to the United States as a child. She is a graduate of the Yale School of Medicine, the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute, and the University of California, Berkeley M.A. program in English literature. Dora Calott Wang lives in New Mexico with her husband where she spearheaded an effort to remove Article 2, Section 22 of the state constitution, an unenforced law forbidding Asians from owning land. She hosts a television talk show, “Duke City Magazine.” This program is free and will take place in the Barth Community Room at Crowell.

New Online Career Services@Crowell Library!

Job hunting just became a lot easier thanks to the fabulous new online services offered on the Crowell Public Library’s home page, http://crowellpubliclibrary.org. Gale publishers have developed a step-by-step interactive guide called Career Transitions, which will take the job seeker through the entire process -- from identifying the job that will fit their particular skill set and interests -- through interview preparation. Other services include updated lists of job postings, tips on writing an eye-catching resume, and completing the perfect job application. Career Transitions was made available to the Library through a grant from the Southern California Library Consortium (SCLC) and is supported in whole by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered in California by the State Librarian. “These services are so easy to use and engaging, I only wish they existed when I began my career,” said Ann Dallavalle, City Librarian. And, since everyone is looking to improve their odds in a very competitive job market, adding a language to that resume may be just the advantage needed. With PowerSpeak, also accessible on Crowell’s home page, learning a new language will become as easy as pie -- or empanada, pâté en croûte, 饼 or even torte. “Language is one of the last barriers in today’s global marketplace,” said Ms. Dallavalle. “We’re thrilled to have language learning products available for our library. This will give our patrons the opportunity to learn Spanish, French, Mandarin or German at their own pace.” Log on now and see for yourself at http://crowellpubliclibrary.org. These services are all free with your Crowell Library card: the best bargain in San Marino!

Bilingual Chinese & English Story Time

Saturday May 22 @ 11:00 a.m. The newest addition to Crowell Public Library’s innovative programming for children, the Bilingual Chinese & English Story Time, now has a regular schedule: the fourth Saturdays of the month. For May, that will be Saturday the 22nd. The library’s amazing Youth Services Department has teamed up with several volunteers from the community to present this unique program. Stories, songs, and finger-plays are conducted in both Mandarin Chinese and English. In an effort to serve Chinese speakers, as well as educate non-Chinese about the culture and expose them to another language, these story times place an emphasis on increasing literacy in both languages. Everyone is invited to attend, regardless of what language(s) you speak. All ages are welcome, but the program is designed for ages 3 to 5. Come hear some of your favorite children’s stories and songs in two different languages, listen to some new ones, and make a fun craft! If your children are too old for story time, but you’d still like to get involved, the library is always looking for volunteer storytellers who are fluent in Mandarin. Crowell Public Library is currently the only public library in the San Gabriel Valley offering a Chinese-English Story Time. Come be a part of this fun and unique program!

He will demonstrate ways to boost metabolism and lose weight. author T. Jefferson Parker in person!

ONE BOOK, ONE CITY: IRON RIVER author T. Jefferson Parker in person SUNDAY APRIL 18TH 2:00 p.m. Meet the author of San Marino’s ONE BOOK, ONE CITY selection for 2010, T. JEFFERSON PARKER, in the library’s Barth Community Room this Sunday, April 18th at 2:00 p.m. Parker is consistently compared to Michael Connelly, Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett by critics who also consider him “the best of today’s crime fiction” (Washington Post). He’s a three-time Edgar Award-winner and a former journalist who lives in Southern California. Iron River immerses Parker’s most beloved series character, Charlie Hood, along the U.S.-Mexican border, where a group of lawmen try to stem the flow of illegal weapons feeding the drug cartel wars. In doing so, Parker gives us a window into the current problems law enforcement face every day. Deputy sheriff Charlie Hood is sent to join the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms task force “Operation Blowdown” -- a mission to try to curtail the constant flow of money and guns across the U.S.-Mexican border. When a stakeout goes wrong and the son of the head of a powerful Mexican cartel ends up dead, cartel soldiers cross the border to take revenge on Hood and his team. The lengths they go to and the innocent lives at stake are shocking, even to Hood. Fast-paced and wholly original, Iron River simultaneously spotlights Parker’s talents as a vivid story teller and brilliant crime writer, and the complex and dangerous gun trafficking industry, a crucial issue of our day.

Adult Connections: Tai Chi For Health

Thursday, April 15, 2010 10:00 a.m. Tai Chi is one of the only forms of exercise to have been proven in controlled trials to reduce falls and the incidence of hip fractures in older people. It is a non-competitive, self-paced system of gentle physical exercise and stretching that emphasizes body awareness and improves balance. Originally developed in China as a martial art, it now has many different styles, with each style having its own subtle emphasis on various principles and methods. To do Tai Chi, a series of postures or movements are performed in a slow graceful manner, each posture flowing into the next without pause, ensuring the body is in constant motion. Tai Chi master SAM GUO will explain a bit about Tai Chi’s origins and variations. Then he will demonstrate some of the basic forms, and get us started on the road to greater flexibility, inner calm and enhanced coordination. Sam teaches Tai Chi classes in a number of different styles, including Hand Form and Sword Form, through the City of San Marino Recreation Department. Adult Connections is a new program being offered at the Crowell Public Library on the third Thursday of the month. Enjoy coffee, donuts and a new topic of interest to an adult audience each month. Upcoming “explorations” may include travel, exercise, digital cameras, de-cluttering, or any other topic of general interest.

LA Opera: The Stigmatized

LA Opera’s ARLENE STONE will present a free audio presentation of this rapturously evocative late-romantic tragedy, the first ever production in the Western hemisphere. Whether you’re a hardcore opera aficionado or a curious novice, you’ll be delightfully entertained, and encouraged to ask questions and offer comments. You might even be inspired to make a trip to the L.A. Music Center for the full production conducted by James Conlon. . With the celebrated Recovered Voices project, LA Opera has played a leading role in rediscovering works by composers who struggled to make their voices heard under the Third Reich. A central figure in the remarkable flowering of opera in early 20th-century Austria, Schreker’s luxuriously orchestrated and exquisitely beautiful score illuminates a story that explores the darker aspects of sexual desire and conquest. In The Stigmatized, the misshapen Alviano has created an idyllic island of great beauty as an escape from his tortured existence. A beautiful painter, Carlotta, mistakes her pity toward him for love; she then turns to a handsome rival, the debauched Count Tamare, with disastrous results. Make Crowell Library your LA Opera gateway!

You-Turn: Changing Direction in Midlife

with Dr. Nancy Irwin Thursday, April 8th 7 p.m. Is your life the road not taken? It’s never too late to turn around. DR. NANCY IRWIN will help you get motivated to pull a 180. She’s pulled a few herself as she trained to be an opera singer, pursued a career as a stand-up comedian and then became a psychotherapist. Her book, You Turn: Changing Direction in Midlife, is full of inspirational stories: a crack dealer who became a real estate investor; a 73 year-old singer who enrolled in law school; a catering director who started rehabbing used cars for low-income people; a Harvard lawyer who became a New Age healer, and many more. Originally from Atlanta, Dr. Irwin experienced an epiphany when she began volunteer work for Children of the Night, a shelter for sexually abused children in Los Angeles. It changed her life, and prompted her to pursue a doctorate in psychology and to specialize in the prevention and healing of child sexual abuse. She is now in private practice and is also a busy public speaker for Children of the Night, the Rape and Incest National Network, and Planned Parenthood. She’s been quoted extensively in Cosmopolitan, Redbook, Women’s World, and others, and has appeared on numerous radio and TV shows, including The Greg Behrendt Show, My Fair Brady, The Eddie Griffin pilot, The Fashion Network, Blind Date to name a few. If you want to identify what’s not working for you, explore where you might want to go, overcome those fears that prevent most people from changing, and learn how to design a life that fulfills you, don’t miss this inspiring evening at Crowell Public Library.

Thaddeus Lowe & the Mt. Lowe Railway

Tuesday March 2nd
7:00 p.m.

Opened with great fanfare on July 4, 1893, the Mount Lowe Incline Railway was hailed as Earth's Grandest Mountain Ride. Built by Civil War balloonist Thaddeus S. C. Lowe and railroad engineer David J. Macpherson in the mountains above Altadena, this funicular was operated for 43 years and served nearly four million passengers from around the world. Where else could one find four hotels, an observatory, the world's largest searchlight, a dance hall, miniature golf, a zoo, horseback riding, tennis, and snowcapped peaks, all within a day's journey from the Pacific Ocean and downtown Los Angeles? The San Gabriel Mountains continue to be a great natural resource and recreational escape for many Angelenos, but the spectacular railway lives on only in the vintage photographs.

Author Michael A. Patris is a third generation native of Los Angeles. He is the founder of the Mount Lowe Preservation Society, Inc., a California nonprofit educational corporation whose archives contain thousands of photographs, ephemera, and souvenirs. All of the images contained in his book come from the society's archives.

Aim your trolley for the Barth Community Room at Crowell Library for a fascinating hour of local history.
