You-Turn: Changing Direction in Midlife

She’s pulled a few herself as she trained to be an opera singer, pursued a career as a stand-up comedian and then became a psychotherapist. Her book, You Turn: Changing Direction in Midlife, is full of inspirational stories: a crack dealer who became a real estate investor; a 73 year-old singer who enrolled in law school; a catering director who started rehabbing used cars for low-income people; a Harvard lawyer who became a New Age healer, and many more. Originally from Atlanta, Dr. Irwin experienced an epiphany when she began volunteer work for Children of the Night, a shelter for sexually abused children in Los Angeles. It changed her life, and prompted her to pursue a doctorate in psychology and to specialize in the prevention and healing of child sexual abuse. She is now in private practice and is also a busy public speaker for Children of the Night, the Rape and Incest National Network, and Planned Parenthood. She’s been quoted extensively in Cosmopolitan, Redbook, Women’s World, and others, and has appeared on numerous radio and TV shows, including The Greg Behrendt Show, My Fair Brady, The Eddie Griffin pilot, The Fashion Network, Blind Date to name a few. Adult Connections: Container Gardening

with Tara Kolla of Silver Lake Farms Thursday, March 18, 10:00 a.m. It doesn’t matter how small the space, everyone can grow something, whether it’s flowers or food. Grower and garden guru TARA KOLLA of Silver Lake Farms, will get us started. We’ll learn how to create a happy, healthy, natural environment for growing food and flowers from seed. She’ll tell us how to prepare the soil, how to properly water and feed plants, and share tips for saving water and money. Tara is a certified urban farmer who started growing and selling organic cut flowers out of her back yard in Silver Lake, Los Angeles, in 2003. She quickly expanded her business, adding organic vegetables, and workshops on urban farming. She recently started offering cooking classes to help her customers and students find new ways to prepare and serve all the fresh produce they are growing under her tutelage. Tara and Silver Lake Farms were featured in Los Angeles Magazine’s October 2009, “Home Grown” issue, and more recently in the February 2010 issue of Sunset magazine. The Doctor Is In: Preventing Stroke

Preventing Stroke, Aneurysm, and Other Vascular Related Conditions Monday, April 19, 2010, 6 p.m. DR. ANDREW HURWITZ, a Board certified Thoracic and Vascular Surgeon will discuss simple methods to prevent brain attack (stroke) and other serious vascular related conditions including aneurysm. April is National Poetry Month—what better way to celebrate than by attending or performing at the Crowell Public Library's second annual poetry slam?! Teens and adults from the greater San Gabriel Valley will have an exciting opportunity to deliver dynamic poetry performances in a coffeehouse setting—complete with live acoustic guitar music played by local talent Rick Valladares. We will serve refreshments--and coffee, of course!

What exactly is a poetry slam? A poetry slam is a competition, a performance, entertainment, excitement, art. Everyone will have an opportunity to perform in front of a panel of judges. Never been in a poetry slam? This is your opportunity to shine!

Teens and adults ages 12 and up are invited to take a chance, get inspired, be creative, entertain, perform, slam! Registration is required of participants--first come, first served; call (626) 300-0777. Performers must have original pieces reviewed by staff before event begins. Prizes will be awarded in two age categories. This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Crowell Public Library.

One Book, One City: Mayhem Mondays!

San Marino’s 2010 One Book, One City events begin with Mayhem Mondays in March, featuring local crime fighters extraordinaire, shades of Parker’s ‘Charlie Hood’ in the featured book Iron River, a thriller on drug trafficking. Kicking off the series will be Los Angeles County SHERIFF LEE BACA on Monday, March 15 at 7:00 p.m. Sheriff Baca commands the largest Sheriff’s Department in the United States, providing law enforcement to 40 incorporated cities, 90 unincorporated communities, 9 community colleges, and hundreds of thousands of daily commuters of the Metropolitan Transit Authority. Baca was elected Sheriff of Los Angeles County in December 1998, and re-elected in June 2006 for his third term in office. He entered the Sheriff’s Department on August 23, 1965 and has served in the United States Marine Corps Reserves. On Monday, March 22 at 7:00 p.m. San Marino’s own Police CHIEF JOHN SCHAEFER will lead a discussion relating to the crimes detailed in Iron River. And on Monday, March 29, also at 7:00 p.m., SPECIAL AGENT JOHN TORRES from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the same agency character Charlie Hood joins forces with in Iron River, will share the reality of working in the Bureau. Fast-paced and wholly original, Iron River simultaneously spotlights T. Jefferson Parker’s talents as a vivid story teller and brilliant crime writer, and the complex and dangerous gun trafficking industry, a crucial issue of our day.
